BIOMICS contributes to Ciência di Noz Manera, a mentorship initiative organised by the GIMM and Champalimaud Foundations
As part of its commitment to community engagement and inclusive science, the BIOMICS Twinning Project proudly joined Ciência di Noz Manera (“Science Our Way” in Cape Verdean Creole), a mentorship initiative co-organised by the GIMM Foundation and the Champalimaud Foundation. This pioneering programme aims to foster diversity in science by engaging directly with underrepresented students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
Working closely with two schools in the Lisbon region, both identified by the Portuguese government as Territórios Educativos de Intervenção Prioritária (TEIP), the programme supports students from economically and socially underserved areas, where dropout rates and underachievement are more common. Through regular mentoring sessions with researchers, including BIOMICS participants, 8th grade students are introduced to scientific careers, diverse role models, and new academic possibilities. These early encounters are key, as Portuguese students must choose their study track by the 9th or 10th grade, often excluding science.
On 11 March 2025, BIOMICS researchers took part in a school visit under the programme, presenting a hands-on educational game that mimicked decision trees and machine learning algorithms. The activity showed how data scientists “teach” machines to make decisions — offering students a fun, intuitive introduction to artificial intelligence and how it connects to real-world research.
By demystifying both science and scientists, this initiative reinforces BIOMICS’ mission to make science more accessible and to empower the next generation of researchers.
