1. Program Overview
GIMM’s Funding & Innovation Office with the support of the BIOMICS project (Grant agreement ID:101159926) launches a Call for Applications for its Technology Transfer Internship Program, aimed at providing early-stage researchers with structured training and hands-on experience in technology transfer, intellectual property management, and innovation in the biomedical and digital health domains.
The program is designed to strengthen translational research capacity within the BIOMICS consortium and to foster closer interaction between research, innovation, and industry.
2. Objectives
The Technology Transfer Internship Program aims to:
- Provide early-stage researchers with practical exposure to Technology Transfer Office (TTO) activities.
- Build capacity in intellectual property (IP) protection, market analysis, and commercialization of research results.
- Strengthen innovation and translational skills within the BIOMICS consortium.
- Foster a network of professionals operating at the interface of research, innovation, and industry.
3. Eligibility
Applicants must meet all the following criteria:
- Be PhD candidates or junior postdoctoral researchers.
- Be affiliated with a BIOMICS partner institution at the time of application.
- Demonstrate motivation and interest in technology transfer, innovation, and research valorization.
Selection will be conducted through a competitive process, based on merit and relevance to the objectives of the program.
4. Internship Conditions
- Duration: 6 months (part-time)
- Time commitment: Up to 4hours per week
- Format: Hybrid (remote work combined with on-site presence at the hosting TTO, when appropriate)
- Available positions: Four (4) internships, offered through two calls (1st – May 2026, 2nd – December 2026)
The program is designed to be flexible and compatible with academic research commitments.
5. Program Structure
The internship follows a structured training and practical framework, including:
- Introduction to the technology transfer ecosystem and TTO operations
- Intellectual Property Management (patents, disclosures, prior art searches)
- Market Analysis and Competitive Landscape assessment
- Commercialization Strategies (licensing, spin-offs, valuation basics)
- Practical internship experience within a Technology Transfer Office, including participation in real cases and meetings
6. Mentorship and Expected Outputs
Each intern will be assigned a dedicated TTO mentor and will receive continuous guidance throughout the internship.
By the end of the program, interns are expected to deliver:
- At least one technology evaluation, IP, or market analysis report
- A contribution to an IP protection or commercialization strategy
- Participation in at least one industry or partner engagement activity
- A final reflective report and presentation to BIOMICS partners
7. Application Procedure
Applicants must submit the following documents in English to funding.innovation@gimm.pt:
- Motivation letter (maximum 1 page), describing interest in technology transfer and relevance to career goals;
- Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages)
- Letter of support from the PI (confirming that the PI agrees that the person participates in this activity and dedicates the 4 weekly hours)
Incomplete applications or applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
8. Evaluation Criteria
Eligible applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
- Motivation and interest in technology transfer and innovation – 80%
- CV – 20%
